Super kong

Super Kong during the Super Guide mode as seen in the game Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii.

Super Guide is an assisted mode that allows the player to skip levels in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.

Overview[]

During the single player of both games, if the player has lost eight extra lives, or five lives in the New Mode of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, inside the same level, a Tutorial Pig's stall will appear at the beginning of the level. At this stall and other checkpoint stalls around the same level, the Tutorial Pig will start to brandish a white flag constantly, even after the checkpoints are active. When the Kongs approach the stall, a speech bubble will appear over the pig, displaying a button prompt. By the player pressing the same button nearby the stall, the game will exhibit a message box, asking if they want to summon the Super Kong in order to skip the current level. If the player picks the option "Yes", the game will reload the beginning of current level, and the Super Kongs, counterparts to Donkey and Diddy Kong with white fur and blue clothes, will proceed to clear the level, while the player watches it. After the Super Kongs reaching the Slot Machine Barrel at the end, the game will return to the current world map, and the player will be able to access the next level using the regular Kongs again.

Items collected by the Super Kongs during the Super Guide mode are not considered earned by the player. It includes bananas, Banana Coins, Extra Life Balloons and Puzzle Pieces. If the player pauses the game during the same mode, they will be able to take control over the Super Kongs. In that case, by failing to clear the current level, and harming both Super Kongs, the player will not lose an extra life. However, the game will send the player back to the current world map immediately afterwards.

In both games, the Super Guide mode can also be used for the player skipping boss levels and Key Temples. The assisted mode can also be triggered inside levels already cleared by the player in the regular way. After the button prompts over Tutorial Pig's stalls for activating the Super Guide mode appear once inside a level, they will persist until the player clearing it once by using the regular Kongs.

The Super Guide mode cannot be activated during the multiplayer or the Mirror Mode of both games. And, for unknown reasons, the same mode cannot be triggered inside the level Golden Temple either.

Trivia[]

  • During the Super Guide mode of the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Puzzle Pieces will always appear as solid objects, even if the player has already collected the pieces previously, outside the assisted mode.
  • There is a Mini Guide mode in the game Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!. The mode allows the player to skip levels, and it can be activated after they have lost eight extra lives in the same level. The player does not earn points for clearing a level in this mode.
  • The Super Guide mode previously appeared in the game New Super Mario Bros. Wii for Nintendo Wii. After the player has lost eight extra lives inside a level during the single player mode, a Super Guide Block will appear at the beginning of the same level. By the player hitting the block, they will be presented the option of activating the mode, allowing them to skip the current level. During the Super Guide mode, Luigi clears the level, instead of Mario, while the player watches it. No score points nor items are earned by the player in the same mode.
    • The same mode is also present in the games New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. It works in similar way to the previous game, but the mode can be triggered after the player loses five extra lives inside the same level, instead of eight lives. The same mode cannot be activated during the multiplayer of both games either.
    • In the game Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Nintendo Wii, there is a mode called Cosmic Guide, which also allows the player to skip levels. During the mode, the Cosmic Spirit (resembling Rosalina) will take control over Mario and collect the Power Star of the current level, while the player watches it. However, at the end of the level, the Power Star will be degrated into a Bronze Power Star. This assisted mode cannot be triggered while the player is controlling Luigi.
