Mario Hoops 3-on-3, known in Europe as Mario Slam Basketball and in Japan as Mario Basketball 3on3 (マリオバスケ 3on3 Mario Basuke 3on3?) was a Mario sports game for the Nintendo DS released in 2006. It was the first Mario basketball game in the sports series and the first Mario sports game to be developed by Square Enix and their second Mario game over all.
In the beginning, the game was meant to be an original intellectual property, but Square Enix felt that it would work well if it were a part of the Mario franchise, and so Square Enix contacted Nintendo, who then allowed them to use the Mario label. This game is the first in which Mario and Final Fantasy characters appear together as playable characters.
