Artwork of Kalimba.

Kalimba is a Tiki, appearing only in Donkey Kong Country Returns and its remake as an enemy and as the first "Boss Tiki." Kalimba is a notable member of the Tiki Tak Tribe (to be precise, he is one of its leaders[citation needed] ). He was the one who first tried to hypnotize Donkey Kong to do his bidding, only to discover he was immune to it from being too stupid, which leads to Kalimba getting beaten up by DK, who sent him flying out of his own treehouse.

Kalimba later appears in World 1-B: Mugly's Mound, where, after using a pose to suggest he is angry about being punched out of Donkey Kong's treehouse, he hypnotizes Mugly to attack Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. However, Mugly is defeated and Kalimba is sent flying yet again. Despite his defeat, that isn't the end for him, because he can later be seen with all the other leader Tikis during the final boss battle, where they help Tiki Tong by turning into hands for him.

Kalimba's tune is the base for all of the other Tikis. When one of the other Tikis, such as Wacky Pipes or Gong-Oh, play their tune, you can hear Kalimba's tune in the background, as well as the Tiki's respective instrument playing with it.

  • A Kalimba is an African thumb instrument that is usually described as a "thumb piano".
  • Kalimba stays unconscious for the longest time after being defeated, giving the player an almost guaranteed first success at punching the Tiki away.
  • Kalimba is the only Tiki that plays his tune after being defeated.
