K. Lumsy's Island is a small, cave-like island towed by King K. Rool's Mobile Island Fortress in the game Donkey Kong 64. This small island is where the giant Kremling K. Lumsy, K. Rool's younger brother, is locked up in for most of the game.

Overview[]

K. Lumsy was imprisoned for refusing to follow his brother's command and destroy the DK Island. The cage where the giant is kept in features eight numbered locks. In order to be open, these locks require Boss Keys usually dropped after bosses are defeated in each level of the game.

As soon as the player collects one or more Boss Keys, they must return to the island and approach the locks to use the keys. By usual means, each numbered lock must be open in ascending order. During these occasions, K. Lumsy will celebrate by violently dancing and jumping inside his cage. The celebration will usually reveal new paths to access the lobbies of new levels and locations in the game.

The lobbies of each level become accessible by the celebrations after the following events:

  • Jungle Japes: Donkey Kong meeting K. Lumsy for the first time and promising to help him will break open the entrance to the lobby of the level Jungle Japes on the base of the DK Island.
  • Angry Aztec: using a Boss Key to open the first lock on the K. Lumsy's cage will unlock the elevated temple on the DK Island where the lobby of the level Angry Aztec is located inside.
  • Frantic Factory and Gloomy Galleon: using a Boss Key to open the second lock on the K. Lumsy's cage will activate a platform, and open an elevated door and an underwater gate at the K. Rool's Mobile Island Fortress, allowing access to the lobbies of both levels Frantic Factory and Gloomy Galleon.
  • Fungi Forest: using a Boss Key to open the fourth lock on the K. Lumsy's cage will reveal a Barrel Cannon on a small island nearby the DK Island, allowing to reach the elevated barn where the lobby of the level Fungi Forest is present.
  • Crystal Caves and Creepy Castle: using a Boss Key to open the fifth lock on the K. Lumsy's cage will break open an elevated passage on the DK Island leading to the lobby of the level Crystal Caves. The same event will also reveal a large Barrel Cannon on an small island next to K. Lumsy's Island, allowing to reach the lobby of the level Creepy Castle.
  • Hideout Helm: using two Boss Keys to open the sixth and seventh locks on the K. Lumsy's cage will activate the passage resembling K. Rool's mouth at the top of the Mobile Island Fortress, creating access to the lobby of the level Hideout Helm.
  • King Kruiser II: using a Boss Key to open the eighth and final lock on the K. Lumsy's cage will trigger a cutscene where the giant will pursue the King Kruiser II, making the airship to crash on the beach of the DK Island. At the top of the crashed ship, there is an opening leading to the final boss battle in the game.

Trivia[]

  • When comparing dimensions between exterior and interior views of the island, and also taking in account K. Lumsy's size, the interior is too big to be contained inside the structure.
  • Oddly, K. Lumsy's celebration after opening the third lock on his cage does not produce any effects outside at the DK Isles of the game Donkey Kong 64, unlike the other locks.
