Flotsam are stingray enemies that are usually found in the aquatic stages of the games Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Land 2.

Overview[]

Donkey Kong Country 2[]

Flotsam mainly live in the waters of the Crocodile Isle, particularly the "sunken ship" stages. The word "flotsam" means leftovers from a shipwreck. In the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version of Donkey Kong Country 2, Flotsam came in two colors: blue and green. Blue Flotsam swim in one direction, even going through walls, while the green Flotsam can change their direction, usually when they reach a wall or a solid object. Flotsam were common water enemies, practically every water stage had them. Like most water enemies, they do not go directly after the Kongs, merely swim casually, but contact with them will injure a Kong or Enguarde the Swordfish. They bear the usual aquatic foe's weakness: Enguarde's ever reliable bill. Kongs under the Invincibility Barrel effect can also defeat Flotsam by touching them.

In the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country 2, the blue and green variants of Flotsam are colored purple and light green, respectively, instead.

Donkey Kong Land 2[]

The Flotsam return, as with most aquatic enemies in the game Donkey Kong Land 2. Flotsam remain relatively unchanged, with no major differences in appearance or attack style. However, there is only a single type of Flotsam capable of swimming back and forward at the same place, and quickly changing directions. They do not have green and blue variants because of the basic Game Boy hardware can only generate black and white colors. In the Super Game Boy for Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Flotsam possess the same brown/golden color palettes as the Kongs, other enemies, and items in the game.

Trivia[]

  • In the German version of the game Donkey Kong Country 2, this enemy is named "Floatsam".
  • In the game Donkey Kong Land, there is a stingray boss called Wild Sting. However, unlike Flotsam, the boss is not an aquatic enemy and it is capable of flying. It is unknown if Wild Sting has served as inspiration for Flotsam.
