Prehistoric Path is the fortieth-fourth level in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, as well as the second level in the Cliff world of Donkey Kong Island. It is preceded by Sticky Situation and followed by Weighty Way.
Overview[]
Most of the progress through the level is made by using a mine cart. Some tracks and platforms will tilt or sink into tar pits by the Kongs' weight. In some points, the primates must duck under spikes to avoid harm and bouncy low or high on enemies to cross over pits and reach items. These spikes are under platforms that nest giant eggs at the top. At the final section, the heroes must also maneuver the mine cart above and later inside a giant egg while avoiding jagged rocks. The level possesses Tiki Buzzes, Tiki Torks and Flaming Tiki Buzzes as enemies, including some Skellirexes riding mine carts.
Walkthrough[]
At the start, go right and past two Skellirexes along some sinking platforms by the Kongs' weight. When you reach a barrel cannon, ignore it, and go below it, over the tar pit and all the way to the right to enter a Bonus Room. There, jump across the two large and moving platforms to collect all forty-seven bananas, two Banana Coins and an Extra Life Balloon within thirty seconds and reveal the first Puzzle Piece. After the Bonus Room, use the barrel cannon above and you will end up in a mine cart. Ride the mine cart down the first slope. On the section with sinking tracks, keep jumping over the following gaps, and collect some bananas and the letter "K" in the process.
Up ahead, duck below the spikes and jump at the other end to get across safely. Bounce across the Skellirexes in mine carts, then jump the gap leading to another sinking section of tracks. Duck below the two spike sections, jump over and avoid to bounce on the Skellirex going at the opposite direction, then when you see a track section above, stay on the lower section until the very end. Jump to collect the letter "O" and continue on the upper track section, bouncing across the Tiki Buzz ahead. At the top of the next hill, jump into the right opening of the platform with spikes below to enter a hidden room containing the second Puzzle Piece. When you emerge at the other side, simply bounce low, without jumping, off the first Tiki Buzz, and bounce high off the next Tiki Buzz to go over the jagged rock and bounce high off the Tiki Tork to make it to the tilting track section ahead.
Ride the next several slabs of tracks until the end before jumping. Bounce high off the Tiki Tork ahead, then when you see some spikes, duck under them and you will reach the checkpoint overhead. Next, jump across the next couple of gaps, ducking under the spikes ahead. At the other end, bounce high off the next Tiki Buzz to collect the letter "N" above a Tiki Tork. Simply bounce low off the Tiki Tork, then jump high off the Tiki Buzz after it. You must end up on the upper track section by doing that. Follow the upper track to the right, jumping over the gap at the end to get the third Puzzle Piece. Go across the next few sections of tracks, ducking under the spikes, and you will see the letter "G" ahead after the second Skellirex. Using good timing, you can jump early to fall over the letter or simply drop onto the next section and collect the letter. Going under the Tiki Tork, continue jumping the gaps and ducking under the spikes until you end up on top of a giant egg.
Ride the egg to the right, leaping over two Tiki Buzzes and a pair of Flaming Tiki Buzzes as you reach them. Fall into the egg itself to avoid a jagged rock above, jump over the holes in the egg as they appear under you, as well as the jagged rocks on the ground. Jump over the hole the first time around, followed by two rocks in a row. When the holes in the egg shell come around a second time, jump low over the first hole to get the fourth Puzzle Piece. Jump over three more jagged rocks, and the egg will eventually break as you continue. Jump across a series of crumbling and sinking track sections, and the camera will zoom in as you reach the end. When you finally crash land in front of the Slot Machine Barrel, ignore it. Instead, go right and ground-pound close by the cactus to reveal the fifth and final Puzzle Piece. Touch the Slot Machine Barrel to finish the level.

K-O-N-G Letters[]
- K: After starting riding the mine cart, you will go down a hill and reach a section where the tracks will sink into the tar pit by the mine cart's weight. The letter "K" is above one of the gaps that you must keep jumping over, next to some bananas.
- O: After the letter "K" and avoiding bounce on a Skellirex riding a mine cart going at the opposite direction of the tracks and towards the Kongs, duck under the spikes and take the lower track section until the very end, even if the section is sinking into the tar. At the end, jump to collect the letter "O" and land on the tracks above.
- N: Just after the checkpoint and ducking some spikes, bounce high off the next Tiki Buzz to reach the letter "N" floating above a Tiki Tork.
- G: After the third Puzzle Piece and two Skellirexes, jump early or simply drop off the track section onto the letter "G" next to a Tiki Tork.
Puzzle Pieces[]
- 1: At the beginning of the level, do not go into the barrel cannon. Go below the barrel, over the tar pit and all the way to the right to find the entrance of a Bonus Room. In the room, use the two large and moving platforms to collect all forty-seven bananas, two Banana Coins and an Extra Life Balloon within thirty seconds and a Puzzle Piece will appear.
- 2: After the letter "O" and bouncing on a Tiki Buzz, instead of ducking under the spikes of the next platform, jump into the opening on the right side to reach a hidden area with a Puzzle Piece.
- 3: Just after the checkpoint and ducking some spikes, bounce high off the next Tiki Buzz, bounce low off the Tiki Tork with the letter "N" above and bounce high off the following Tiki Buzz to reach the upper track section. At the end of the section, jump over the gap to get a Puzzle piece.
- 4: After the letter "G", in section where the primates ride the mine cart inside an egg, go past two jagged rocks on the ground and get the Puzzle Piece by making a short jump while going across the first hole in the egg shell.
- 5: At the end of the level, ground-pound close by the cactus to the right of the Slot Machine Barrel to reveal a Puzzle Piece.
Puzzle[]
The puzzle of Prehistoric Path is of a strawberry against a light green background. When all of the pieces are found, the Tutorial Pig artwork will be added to the Kong Gallery of the Image Gallery in the Extras menu.
