Bear Coins are a type of coin found in the games Donkey Kong Country 3 and Donkey Kong Land III. Indicated by the name, these silver coins have a bear insignia on them. Bear Coins are the regular currency in the Northern Kremisphere.
Donkey Kong Country 3
Bear Coins are the base currency of Donkey Kong Country 3, used by the Kongs to buy various items from the Brothers Bear and play optional minigames, such as Swanky's Sideshow in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version of the game and Swanky's Dash in the Game Boy Advance version. Both minigames also reward the player more Bear Coins for winning.
Bear Coins can be found hidden throughout most stages, often invisible to the player until collected. There are always at least two in every stage. Although a Bear Coin has already been collected inside a stage, replaying a section of it by re-entering the stage or leaving a Bonus Room in it, the coin can be picked up again at the same location. Losing extra lives will not subtract collected Bear Coins. After earning a Bonus Coin for beating any boss for the first time, the player will always receive single Bear Coins for defeating these bosses again.
In Donkey Kong Country 3, the player can hold a maximum total of ninety-nine Bear Coins. Any coins collected beyond this number are not registered by the counter. The game also keeps track on the current number of collected Bear Coins by the player when it is saved in any game file.
Donkey Kong Land III
In Donkey Kong Land III, Bear Coins are common collectables found inside most of stages of the game. Here, they are used to play memory minigames at the Bear's Sheepy Shops in order to earn DK Coins and Stop Watches.
- Bear Coins are functionally similar to Banana Coins, the regular currency in the games Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Land 2. However, Banana Coins are required for most of the services in both games.
