A DK Barrel

Barrels are common items found in the Donkey Kong series. They first appeared in the 1981 game Donkey Kong and have remained a recurring item since.

Types

Note- Most of the names are taken from the DKC GBA instruction manual.

DK Barrels/Buddy Barrels

A DK Barrel is a different kind of barrel, present in all of the DKC games as well in most of DK's recent games. Breaking one would free a defeated Kong, making them playable. If you find one when no Kongs are defeated, they will break like regular barrels

Wooden Barrels

Wooden Barrels are found throughout the levels of all of the DKC trilogy, and are commonly used to defeat enemies or open Bonus Rooms. If they are thrown to the ground, they will roll until they make contact with a wall or enemy.

Vine Barrels

Vine Barrels work in a very similar fashion to wooden ones, the only difference is that they will break upon contact with anything, even if dropped. They are commonly found in Platform Perils.

Steel Kegs

Steel Kegs are entirely metal barrels, usually used to get DK Coins from Koin in DKC3. They are also used in DKC. They are mysteriously absent from Donkey Kong Country 2. These roll like wooden barrels when thrown, and can bounce off walls and can even be rode on. These can plow through many enemies while rolling, unlike regular Wooden ones.

Continue Barrels

Continue Barrels are are found in each and every level in the DKC trilogy (excluding boss levels), and are very useful. They basicly act as a "checkpoint" or "continue point", as once broken, the Kong can continue from there when defeated. They are floating and quite sparkily, making them easy to notice once on screen. Continue Barrels are usually located mid-level, indicating that the player has completed around half of the level.

Bonus Barrels

Bonus Barrels are present throughout several the DK games, particularly the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. They are scattered throughout all the levels in the trilogy, and going into ones will give the player a challenge to complete, usually getting to the end of a course or defeating enemies. In DKC 2 and 3, you were rewarded coins for completing challenges, and in all 3 games they were required to get the highest percent complete. If you got all the bonus barrels in a level, there was a ! added to the end of a level's title. In DKC 3, the blue/pink flag flapping high indicates that all the bonus barrels were found.

TNT Barrels

TNT Barrels are barrels with explosive power, and can kill all non-boss enemies when they make are hit with one. Throwing one will automaticly cause it to explode when it makes contact with anything. Even putting the barrel down will cause it to shake and rumble, eventually exploding. Doing so will not affect the Kong who dropped it. However, in DKC's intro, it is shown that DK is very scared of these barrels when Cranky Kong throws one at him.

Warp Barrels

Available in most levels of the DKC Trilogy, Warp Barrels are invisible until hit. These barrels will warp the player through the beginning a level to near the very end of one. These are extremely useful in doing speed runs of the games they appear in, as levels can be completed within seconds with these.

Stop & Go Barrels

These barrels have made their only appearance in the Stop & Go Station of DKC. Touching one these will temporarily stop a Rock Kroc dead in its tracks, and cause it to hide its face, allowing a Kong to freely pass by it.

On & Off Barrels

Also a level-only exclusive of DKC, these barrels are found in the level Loopy Lights. Touching one will cause the room to be temporarily lit, making it much safer to get to the end of the level. It is very hard to navigate otherwise, as the leveel it is on is a cave-like level, with most of the platforms being made of dark rock platforms.

Barrel Cannons

Barrel Cannons, when inside, will shoot the player in whatever direction it's facing. How exactly these cannons shoot is dependant on it's type. B.C.s without any symbol will allow the player to shoot themselves out via pressing the "A" button. Ones with an explosion symbol fire automaticlly upon entering. Timed barrels have a time limit for the player to launch themselves out before automaticly shooting.

Krochead Barrels

Krochead Barrel

Krochead Barrels are a type of barrel most commonly found in the Krem Quay in the game Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

Usually found hovering in the air, Krochead Barrels, upon being touched by either Diddy Kong or Dixie Kong, will summon several Krocheads, which Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong can use to cross large gaps. The Krockheads summoned by a Krochead Barrel will only be surfaced for a short amount of time, meaning Diddy and Dixie will need to hop on them quickly, before they submerge themselves.

Rollarcoaster Exclusive Barrels

Plus and Minus Barrels

Only found on rollar-coaster levels, the plus and minus barrels will add time to the clock that is counting down to when Kackle will catch the Kongs. The + barrels will add time, and the - barrels will add less.

Check and X Barrels

These open and close the gates on the rollercoaster levels, and these can be the difference between a win and a loss of the level. Going into a closed gate will defeat a Kong.

Steerable Barrels

You can move the barrel itself in any direction when inside without a time limit.

Diddy & Dixie Barrels

Some barrels can only be used by Diddy or Dixie, and their respective faces can be seen on the barrel itself. These usually lead to bonus areas.

Exclamation Barrels

Work in a very similar fashion to Mario's "Starman" item, upon contact with an E.P. barrel will make a Kong temporarily invincible.

Booster Barrels

Jumping into one of these will launch a Kong upwards to higher ground.

Animal Barrels

Jumping into these barrels will turn a Kong into the respective animal symbol on the barrel itself.
