Ackstacks are larger and stacked versions of Toothberries, also enemies found in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. They act as living barriers to the Kongs' progress.

Overview

Ackstacks are only encountered in the Ruins level Itty Bitty Biters. Unlike the regular Toothberries, which are colored blue, they are colored yellow. Ackstacks never show up by themselves individually. Instead, these foes travel as stacks in groups of five. Each individual is comparable in size to Acks, red variants of Toothberries.

Ackstacks will usually move back and forward by leaping, patrolling over a single platform. They are invincible against all primates' attacks in their upright state, including the ground-pound move and shots from the Diddy Kong's Peanut Popguns. However, an entire stack of the same enemies can be defeated by throwing a barrel at it.

As soon as they notice Donkey and Diddy Kong nearby, Ackstacks will stop and bend back for a few instants, open their mouths and lung towards the two heroes. During this movement, if the player tries to move out of range of the enemies before they have throw themselves, the Ackstacks will immediately return to the previous stacked stance and resume their patrol. When the Ackstacks complete their attack, the Kongs must get out of the way so that the enemies miss them and fall to the floor with their mouths open. In this state, each Acktack can be defeated only by a single jump attack on the head or a barrel thrown at it.

Trivia

  • In the same level, Itty Bitty Biters, from the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, where Ackstacks appear, there are many statues sculpted after the likeness of Ackstacks and their Toothberries variants.
  • Ackstacks slightly resemble Pokeys, enemies from the Super Mario Bros. game series, as both enemy types have multiple yellow round body parts stacked on top of each other. However, Pokeys are usually single multi-segmented creatures, and Ackstacks are multiple individuals stacked together, instead.
