75m is the third stage of the original Donkey Kong arcade game and second stage in the Family Computer/Nintendo Entertainment System version. It is also known as the "Elevator Stage" due to the unique elevator-based gameplay that takes place on this stage. It is preceded by 50m in the arcade version of Donkey Kong and in Donkey Kong '94, preceded by 25m in the Famicom/NES version of Donkey Kong, and followed by 100m in all versions.

This stage would later be revamped into a battle stage in the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Nintendo Wii.

History[]

Donkey Kong[]

This stage has many unique features. First off, two elevators appear in the stage for Jumpman to use. This stage contains many small segments of landable areas on the construction site, so timing jumps is key. If Jumpman jumps off the elevator and has too much air time, when he lands, he will lose a life. If Jumpman lands on the platform at the bottom, he will also lose a life. A Trouble Bug will greet Jumpman on the second platform, which calls for careful timing on when the player should land safe of the fireball. After, the player can either grab the Lady's hat, guarded by the Trouble Bugs or choose the safer option and get to the second stream of elevators.

After getting past the two elevators, Jumpman's troubles will not end there. Donkey Kong, out of barrels, will toss bouncy and dangerous Springs towards Jumpman. They do go in a pattern, but are still somewhat unpredictable. The second Trouble Bug is to the far right guarding Lady's purse. This stage overall is rather annoying and tight, but practice and studying the timing of the Springs will ease the stage.

Donkey Kong '94[]

Together with 25m, 50m and 100m, the stage appears almost unchanged in the beginning of the game Donkey Kong for Game Boy.

Super Smash Bros. series[]

75m would also make a reappearance several years later (aside from remakes) in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as one of the unlockable stages. In order to unlock the stage, one must play as Donkey Kong in 20 brawls. Despite other "retro" stages in Super Smash Bros. Brawl being 2-D, 75m's platforms were given 3-D depth. Trouble Bugs, the ladders, Pauline's items, and retro Donkey Kong are rendered as sprites however.

The stage retains the tight feel from the arcade version, but the far right has been extended for Super Smash Bros. Brawl's fighting gameplay. The ladders are climbable and Pauline's items are collectible as well, and even add up to a "high score" at the top of the stage (though does not directly affect gameplay nor do the points carry on to future Brawls). Trouble Bugs count as moving enemies and will hurt and burn a fighter on contact. A retro render of Donkey Kong will appear in his usual spot, occasionally coming out and tossing Springs as he would in the original. Retro Donkey Kong is invincible and contact will greatly hurt a fighter, and the Springs themselves are deadly.

Aside from a stage, the Famicom/NES version also appears as a "masterpiece" game demo in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Songs unlocked upon obtaining the stage in the My Music option:

  • Donkey Kong
  • Opening (Donkey Kong)
  • 25m BGM

The stage later reappears in the games Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Trivia[]

  • This is the second largest stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • The Donkey Kong "masterpiece" game demo in Super Smash Bros. Brawl starts the player off on the 75m stage.
