Happy 25th Birthday DKC3!
And uh..... I kinda like it
This is a link to a form featuring most major DK characters. A few of the bosses from each game are included, but most aren't.
I enjoy the DKC3 GBA soundtrack, but I feel like it doesn't really fit with the aesthetic of the game. More often than not, it feels like it's relying way too much on atmosphere, with tracks like Stilt Village and Cavern Caprice taking way too long to get started, even with similar tracks like Klomp's Romp and Ice Cave Chant, they had small music integrations before getting into the main melody. The tracks are good, but they typically either don't fit the tone (The hub world theme lacks the mystery and intrigue of the Northern Kremisphere) or sound like they belong in different levels (Mill Fever and the Brothers Bear theme fit this bill). I love the soundtrack for the remake, but it often feels like it was intended for a different game.
I saw a post like this on the DKVine forum and I want to give it a try. I want to hear what world you want to remove from each game, and why. You can also move certain levels to other worlds if you want.
The first game, I'd obviously remove Chimp Caverns for the same reasons everyone gives, I'd specifically remove it as a world, and split the levels between Monkey Mines and Kremkroc Industries
DKC2, Gloomy Gulch has pretty slow levels with infuriating gimmicks, and it features a reused boss, I'd move Gusty Glade and Haunted Hall to Krem Quay and Krazy Kremland respectively, since they're both actually fun
DKC3, I know this is going to be a major cop out, but I'm cutting Pacifica, we don't need two aquatic worlds, and given the overall structure of DKC3, I don't think any world should be cut
DKCR, Beach, it wasn't part of DKC1, unlike Cliffs and Volcano, it doesn't use an aesthetic present in any of the SNES games, and it doesn't have any memorable moments other than Squiddicus
DKCTF: Sea Breeze Cove, even with the Tropical Freeze swimming design, water levels are still a low point (especially without Enguarde). Fugu is awful, and once again, Squiddicus isn't enough to save this world
It's just a healthy sheen
No tags because then the answer would be obvious
What if Jungle Climber comes from an alternate timeline where K. Rool was successful in blowing up DK Isle? It sounds crazy, but I don't see anything that can disprove it.
Given all the stuff that's been happening with the series in recent years, I'd probably say yes. We've only had 4 games since the definitive dark age of DK, and 2 of those were reissues. We're getting the smallest possible bones thrown to us, and the franchise is in a worse spot now than it was in the 2000s. At least we were getting games then. Now all we have is Donkey Kong being used as roster filler on Mario spinoffs. I don't want to believe it's dead, but I'm sure you'll all understand why I consider this period as the Zombie DK era.
For my list of the eras, it goes
1981-1994 Classic era
1994-2001 Peak era
2002-2009 Dark age
2010-2013 Chance of surviving
2014- Present Zombie DK era
I'd just like to know some random headcanons you all have that don't really add to the narrative, but are interesting to believe. One of mine is that Bear is the oldest Brothers Bear, and Bazaar's General Store used to be owned by Bear. I'd just like to hear other stuff like that from the rest of you. This can also be simpler stuff like timeline placements for side games (I consider Jungle Beat to be a prequel to the SNES Trilogy)
My goal for this discussions page it to keep posts from being put into the "General" category. When filtering posts by category, this isn't helpful at all and makes things more difficult.
That's why, when creating a post, please sort it into a matching category. It's becoming a bit annoying to change them by myself. Thanks!
By the way, if you feel like your post doesn't fit into any category, put it in "General" and I'll change it. Or perhaps you can request a new category, if you'd like.
Yesterday's Nintendo Direct really surprised me.
As always - no new Donkey Kong announcement. There's that.
Kirby is getting a 3D platformer? Ok.
The Mario Movie's cast it... okay I guess? Idk why but DK and Cranky also make an appearance there so...cool?
Mario Party Superstars looks as good as ever.
Still no Diddy for Mario Golf Super Rush? Huh.
Nintendo 64 games for the Switch? Great, but Donkey Kong 64 is missing from the collection and isn't planned for the production ever, which means I'll still have to throw my wallet out the window if I ever wanted to play it.
Splatoon 3 involves heavy squid plot. Cool.
The Donkey Kong franchise is just rotting at this point, isn't it.
The Direct itself was pretty solid. Great new content, but sadly a lot of stuff felt left out. It feels like the Direct didn't showcase everything Nintendo could have shown.
Whatever. We'll just need to wait until the next Nintendo Direct, presumably next year. Oh well.
Here are a few custom images of this fan-made idea.
Costume 1: Realistic look of the Kritters from the SNES games, using the clothing from the modern games, basically an amalgamation of the old and new designs, and the design from Smash 4 3DS. Klaptraps would use the same color as the assist trophy
Costume 2: Blue skin and grey pants, the grey pants are a reference to the boss Kritters from Jungle Climber
Costume 3: Grey Skin, black pants, references both Kaboings and the monochrome sprites from Donkey Kong Land
Costume 4: Purple skin, brown pants, references the GBA sprite, and Skiddas
Costume 5: Lighter Green skin, with the Kritter outfit from Donkey Kong 64
Costume 6: Red skin, still with the 64 outfit
Costume 7: Lighter Green skin, with the goalie outfit from Super Mario Strikers
Costume 8: Goalie design from Mario Strikers Charged
Let me know what you think of these, and if you want me to think of more Smash Alts for Donkey Kong characters.
Edit: As a bonus, I'll explain the special attacks I have in mind for Kritter. Much like Piranha Plant, Kritter would be an combination of various Kritter variations and other Kremlings.
Neutral Special: Throws a Klaptrap forward, it disappears if it hits something or falls off the stage. The Klaptrap will also jump if Kritter jumps, much like Purple Klaptraps in the first game. The attack can also be charged up to throw a Big Klaptrap, which doesn't jump, but will obviously do more damage. Klaptraps will also have different designs depending on the Alt, which I will explain later.
Side Special: Gets angry and charges forward like a Kruncha, works a lot like the WonderWing, but instead of having a limited use, it will deal damage right before being used, as Krunchas can only do this after being attacked.
Up Special: Uses spring loaded peg legs for a higher jump, also functions as a ground pound, more or less a clone of the Dedede up special
Down Special: Throws an Orange Grenade, bounces around for about 5 seconds before exploding, not much else to say here.
